Masks for woodburn
[NOTE: Since this article was written, Deaconess Marta and her team of volunteers have been instrumental in distributing over 13,000 masks in the Woodburn area.]
During the first week in May 2020 it was reported that Woodburn, Oregon had the second highest number of COVID-19 cases in the state. It has also been reported that the incidence of the virus is as much as 30% higher among Latinos than in other segments of the population. Woodburn's population is over 50% Latino.
Silverton is about 14 miles from Woodburn. The Silverton Senior Center would like to help their neighbors in Woodburn by providing masks. The Senior Center has purchased hundreds of paper masks and is mobilizing volunteers to sew fabric masks. Pastor Zabdi López (Hope Lutheran Church, Woodburn) suggested handing out the masks at the entrance of the Mega Foods grocery store. The manager of Mega Foods is happy to help the effort by providing a table and signs. Deaconess Marta Luna (Lutheran Latino Ministries), the volunteers she recruited, and Pastor Lopez began distributing masks to families in Woodburn in addition to helping with the Mega Foods distribution.
LLM is grateful to Silverton Senior Center for their care and generosity, and to Mega Foods for hosting the give-away.
May God bless this partnership and may it help slow the spread of the corona virus.
